Max-cushion shoes
Tall, soft stacks for comfort on long or recovery runs.
Is this the type for you?
Max-cushion shoes have a very tall stack of soft foam for a plush, protected ride that many find easier on long runs and recovery days. The trade-offs are extra weight and, for some, a less stable, less connected feel. They suit high-mileage runners, heavier runners and anyone who simply prefers a soft ride; if you like ground feel, they will not be for you.
Best for: Long runs, recovery days, bigger runners.
Individual max-cushion shoes with verified specs are added over time. The category guidance above applies to any shoe in this class.
Understanding the specs
Weight is measured per shoe. Lighter feels faster and less tiring, but very light usually means less cushioning and durability. Drop (or offset) is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot in millimetres: a higher drop, around 8–12 mm, shifts load toward the heel, while a lower drop, 0–6 mm, asks more of the calf and Achilles — change it gradually. Cushioning and stack height describe how much foam sits underfoot: more is plusher and more protective, less gives better ground feel and stability.
Above all, fit and comfort predict how a shoe works for you better than any number on the box. Try shoes on late in the day when your feet are largest, leave a thumb's width at the toe, and if you can, run a few steps before deciding.
