Racing shoes

Light, propulsive shoes for race day and fast sessions.

Is this the type for you?

Racing shoes strip weight and add propulsion, often with a stiff plate and a resilient high-stack foam that returns energy. They can genuinely help your times but are less durable and less stable than trainers, so most runners save them for races and key fast sessions rather than everyday running. Build up in them gradually — the different feel can load the calves and feet in new ways.

Best for: Races and speed work, not daily miles.

Individual racing shoes with verified specs are added over time. The category guidance above applies to any shoe in this class.

Understanding the specs

Weight is measured per shoe. Lighter feels faster and less tiring, but very light usually means less cushioning and durability. Drop (or offset) is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot in millimetres: a higher drop, around 8–12 mm, shifts load toward the heel, while a lower drop, 0–6 mm, asks more of the calf and Achilles — change it gradually. Cushioning and stack height describe how much foam sits underfoot: more is plusher and more protective, less gives better ground feel and stability.

Above all, fit and comfort predict how a shoe works for you better than any number on the box. Try shoes on late in the day when your feet are largest, leave a thumb's width at the toe, and if you can, run a few steps before deciding.
