Is this the type for you?

A road shoe is the default choice for running on pavement, tarmac and the treadmill. It balances cushioning, weight and durability so it can handle daily training. If you own one pair of running shoes, this is usually the pair. Look for a comfortable, roomy toe box, a secure heel, and enough cushioning to stay comfortable at the distances you actually run.

Best for: Most runners, most days.

Individual road running shoes with verified specs are added over time. The category guidance above applies to any shoe in this class.

Understanding the specs

Weight is measured per shoe. Lighter feels faster and less tiring, but very light usually means less cushioning and durability. Drop (or offset) is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot in millimetres: a higher drop, around 8–12 mm, shifts load toward the heel, while a lower drop, 0–6 mm, asks more of the calf and Achilles — change it gradually. Cushioning and stack height describe how much foam sits underfoot: more is plusher and more protective, less gives better ground feel and stability.

Above all, fit and comfort predict how a shoe works for you better than any number on the box. Try shoes on late in the day when your feet are largest, leave a thumb's width at the toe, and if you can, run a few steps before deciding.
