Is this the type for you?

Stability shoes add support features — firmer foam on the inner side, guide rails or a wider base — to gently limit how far the foot rolls inward. They can help runners who overpronate noticeably or who get certain aches in neutral shoes. Modern guidance is to choose by comfort and any history of injury rather than by a shop treadmill clip alone; if neutral shoes feel good and you run injury-free, you probably do not need one.

Best for: Runners who overpronate and feel it.

Individual stability shoes with verified specs are added over time. The category guidance above applies to any shoe in this class.

Understanding the specs

Weight is measured per shoe. Lighter feels faster and less tiring, but very light usually means less cushioning and durability. Drop (or offset) is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot in millimetres: a higher drop, around 8–12 mm, shifts load toward the heel, while a lower drop, 0–6 mm, asks more of the calf and Achilles — change it gradually. Cushioning and stack height describe how much foam sits underfoot: more is plusher and more protective, less gives better ground feel and stability.

Above all, fit and comfort predict how a shoe works for you better than any number on the box. Try shoes on late in the day when your feet are largest, leave a thumb's width at the toe, and if you can, run a few steps before deciding.
